Heat Pump Systems in Southern California
Heating & Cooling from One System, With Clear Guidance
An air-source heat pump transfers heat to provide both cooling and heating from one system. Because the same equipment works throughout the year, choosing or servicing it requires careful attention to system capacity, airflow, and duct condition, along with the home’s comfort patterns.
At NEXGEN, we evaluate the complete heating and cooling setup before recommending a solution. We diagnose existing equipment problems, compare repair and replacement options, and plan new installations for Southern California homes. These services cover home comfort systems, not heat pump water heaters.

Heat Pump Installation, Repair, & Maintenance
Whether you need a new system, an upgrade, or service for existing equipment, our technicians assess the system and explain what they find. We then walk you through the appropriate repair or replacement options.
Our services include:
- Installation: Selecting and installing equipment suited to the home’s layout and heating and cooling needs.
- Replacement: Evaluating an aging or unreliable system and reviewing compatible options.
- Repair: Diagnosing operating problems before recommending the appropriate work.
- HVAC maintenance: Inspecting and servicing equipment for seasonal operation.
Carefully Selected, Continuously Trained Technicians
Our technicians are carefully selected and continuously trained. We prioritize clear communication, reliable workmanship, and completing the agreed-upon work correctly the first time.
We also provide HVAC, plumbing, and electrical services through one home services company. Our broader service commitments include competitive pricing, price-match guarantees, and product protections, with coverage and terms depending on the applicable product or project.
Compare Ducted & Ductless Heat Pump Systems
Ducted and ductless systems meet different layout, zoning, and installation needs. The right configuration depends on the property, existing ductwork, available space, and project budget.
Ducted Heat Pumps
A ducted heat pump uses an outdoor unit and the home’s duct system to distribute conditioned air. Before installation or replacement, the ducts should be evaluated for condition, sizing, and airflow.
Ductless Mini-Splits
A ductless mini-split uses individual indoor air handlers instead of a central duct network. It can provide room-by-room or zone-based control and may suit homes where adding or modifying ducts isn’t practical.
Signs Your Heat Pump Needs Service
A symptom alone can’t determine whether equipment should be repaired or replaced. A system evaluation identifies the cause and helps establish which options fit its condition.
Common reasons to schedule an evaluation include:
- Inadequate heating or cooling
- Uneven temperatures between rooms
- Reduced airflow from the vents
- Unusual outdoor-unit noise
- Ice that remains beyond a normal defrost cycle
- Frequent or continuous operation
Diagnosis may include inspecting the reversing valve, which changes refrigerant flow to switch between heating and cooling, as well as the defrost controls. We may also check airflow, thermostat settings, and the system’s electrical and refrigerant components. During heating operation, a normal defrost cycle temporarily removes frost from the outdoor coil.
California Code, Permits, & Incentives
HVAC replacements and alterations in California may require permits and must comply with applicable building codes. Under the California Energy Commission’s 2025 Energy Code, covered new construction, additions, and alterations must comply when permit applications are submitted on or after January 1, 2026.
Heat pump rebates may be available through state, utility, or income-qualified programs. Funding, service territories, equipment requirements, and eligibility can change, so homeowners should verify current program details while planning a project.
What to Expect from Your Heat Pump Service
We keep each step clear from the first call through the final walkthrough. The process can vary depending on whether you need maintenance, diagnosis, repair, replacement, or a new installation.
A project may include:
- Initial discussion: We ask about the current equipment, operating symptoms, comfort concerns, and project goals.
- System assessment: Our technician reviews the equipment and relevant conditions in the home.
- Options review: We explain our findings and discuss appropriate repair or replacement choices.
- Service or installation: Our team completes the agreed-upon work.
- Testing and walkthrough: We test the system and review the completed work with you.
Our multiple service locations allow us to serve homeowners across Southern California. During the project, we also explain any applicable product protections, including the relevant coverage and terms.
What to Compare Before Choosing a Heat Pump
No single configuration fits every property. Equipment selection should account for the home’s heating and cooling load, duct condition, airflow, electrical service, available space, and preferred controls.
Important project factors include:
- System capacity: Equipment should be evaluated against the home’s heating and cooling requirements, not selected by outdoor-unit size alone.
- Indoor equipment: A replacement may require review of the indoor unit, refrigerant requirements, thermostat, and controls.
- Ductwork and airflow: Existing ducts can affect which equipment configuration is appropriate for the home.
- Electrical requirements: Available electrical service must be considered alongside the planned equipment.
- Testing and commissioning: After installation, commissioning verifies the system’s setup and operation.
Ducted systems and ductless mini-splits address different layout and zoning needs. We review the property and explain the practical differences so you can choose a configuration suited to your home.

“NEXTGEN repaired my HVAC system which had an intermittent heating problem on a timely basis and it was covered under warranty. The technician was very polite an professional.”- Mark R. -
Can't Say Enough Good Things
“My thermostat took a dive on me so I went to replace it. That's where I met Breanna at Home Depot she advised me on the Ecobee one and normally I don't use big companies because of cost is always higher since they have higher overhead. However, at $49 for a diagnostic they sent someone out and that's when things got even better Lazaro was our technician. He was trustworthy and communicative and effective at explaining to me and my wife what he's doing to our unit and why. In the end because of his demeanor and character I chose to get work done through his company. I got an ionizer placed and he patched a few areas where air was escaping. Cleaned condenser and added a second capacitor and cleaned the fan on inside of my house as well as checked the coils which were fine. In summary the company is trustworthy or at least my experience was good. At at a $49 diagnostic fee it was worth it to have someone come out and let me know where I'm at. Can't say enough though about Lazaro he sold me on trusting next gen so if everyone is like him you'll find value.”- S.S. -
Trustworthy Team
“My technician Joseph was a solid and upstanding dude. He took his time doing an inspection of my old hvac system. He let me hover over him and helped educate me on the different components of the furnace and AC units. He didn’t tell me what I wanted to hear, but he told me what I needed to hear. Would trust him and his team to do my maintenance and future installs for my home.”- Andrew W. -
Great Service!
“My AC stopped working and gave me a power failure message. Ryan was dispatched as the technician to assist. He was great, he quickly diagnosed the issues (fuses and capacitors). He gave me practical solutions and was great to work with. If I have issues in the future I will be asking for him specifically.”- Roger D. -
Appreciate the Team
“Gabe was so efficient and explained everything so we could understand. He took his time to thoroughly look at all of our concerns and figure out some type of solution. I appreciate his taking the time with us!”- Carly N. -
Went Above & Beyond
“Ryan was extremely professional and knowledgeable. He took the time to thoroughly explain everything in a clear, detailed way, which I genuinely appreciated. He was clean, respectful of our space, and very thorough in his work. You can tell he takes pride in what he does. He went above and beyond, and his kindness and professionalism did not go unnoticed. Highly recommend.”- Erika A.
